The science-fiction films to look forward to in 2026

New Scientist

Well, those little green shoots of recovery I forecast last year have flowered. This year is set to bring tighter scripts, cheaper projects (which is good, because studios can take more chances) and a more enjoyable cinema-going experience all round. On 16 January, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will deliver (honest) on all those promises exasperatingly kept back in 2025's 28 Years Later . There will be Cillian Murphy reprising his role from 2002's 28 Days Later, plus more from actor Jack O'Connell's "Jimmys", an acrobatic killer cult. There will also be Nia DaCosta in the director's chair - a young, much-lauded talent who not so long ago had the misfortune to helm The Marvels .

US authors' copyright lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft combined in New York with newspaper actions

The Guardian

A transfer order made by the US judicial panel on multidistrict litigation on Thursday said that centralisation will "allow a single judge to coordinate discovery, streamline pretrial proceedings, and eliminate inconsistent rulings". Cases brought in California by prominent authors including Ta-Nehisi Coates, Michael Chabon, Junot Díaz and the comedian Sarah Silverman will be transferred to New York and joined with cases brought by news outlets, including the New York Times, and other authors including John Grisham, George Saunders, Jonathan Franzen and Jodi Picoult. Most of the plaintiffs opposed consolidation, arguing that their cases were too different to be combined. OpenAI had proposed consolidating the cases in northern California. The judicial panel ultimately transferred the cases to the southern district of New York, stating that centralisation would "serve the convenience of the parties and witnesses" and "promote the just and efficient conduct of this litigation".

Replaying games from my past with my young children has been surreal – and transformative

The Guardian

Thanks to some distinctly Scottish weather over the holidays, my family and I ended up celebrating Hogmanay at home rather than at the party we'd planned to attend. My smallest son's wee pal and his parents came over for dinner, and when the smaller members of our group started to spiral out of control around 9pm, we threw them a little midnight countdown party in Animal Crossing. The last time I played Animal Crossing was in the depths of lockdown. Tending my island paradise helped me cope while largely imprisoned in a 2.5 bedroom basement flat with a baby, a toddler and a teenager. Our guests had brought their family Switch, and we set up the kids with their little avatars so they could join the animals' New Year party. They spent about 10 minutes gleefully whacking each other with bug nets before gathering with the other inhabitants in the square with a giant countdown clock in the background, the island's racoon magnate Tom Nook offering party poppers and shiny top-hats.

Games to look forward to in 2025: Avowed

The Guardian

There was a long-running joke that Bethesda's Skyrim had become so ubiquitous that it would run on anything. Starting life on the humble Xbox 360, it found its way on to Nintendo Switch, virtual reality headsets, PS5 and even Amazon's Alexa. After more than 13 years, its sequel is still nowhere to be seen, so role playing game veterans Obsidian are offering fans an alternative in the form of Avowed. I'm taken aback by just how fun and breezy it is, given that it has been spun off the somewhat stuffier computer RPG Pillars of Eternity. Entering the game's colour-saturated world, Eora, I explore a luscious overgrown cavern with my alarmingly athletic mage, and find myself leaping across chasms and climbing rock faces without breaking a sweat. Where Skyrim's dull colour palette and clunky combat betray its 2011 origins, Avowed's kineticism and vibrance make first-person spellcasting feel fun.

Why Should We Look Forward to Self-Aware AI? - Big Data Analytics News

#artificialintelligence

Many experts believe that the era of the self-aware AI is still far ahead in the future. They say that robotic sentience is still highly theoretical and needs ongoing research. However, several technologists and roboticists have claimed to having developed sentient machines. So, we have to ask, is it really that far off in the future? Or, has the so-called experts just been remiss in agreeing on standards to define true robotic sentience?
